Abstract:
The requirement for utilizing high-performance thermoplastic composites (TPCs) from different industries has risen in the last years due to their excellent mechanical properties. Although improving mechanical characteristics of TPCs is a promising development for future engineering applications, great attention has to be given on determining appropriate fabrication and joining techniques due to limitations in manufacturing technology. On the other hand, despite several research works have been carried out investigating the mechanical properties of various short carbon fiber reinforced (SCFR) TPCs, the lack of knowledge about the effects of processing parameters of compression molding (CM) and ultrasonic welding (USW) on the mechanical performance of TPCs was the motivation of this thesis.
According to the mechanical tests to define tensile and impact characteristics, it was concluded from the first stage of this thesis that the tensile response of compression molded samples was found to be highly dependent on carbon fiber content and molding temperature, whereas impact properties were mostly affected by molding pressure. With input from the first stage, molded samples were ultrasonically welded in lap configuration to reveal the joint strength under shear. Up to 7.67 MPa lap shear strength (LSS) is achieved by experiments where welding pressure and duration were seen to have the most significance. On the other hand, energy dissipation during welding was also considered as high levels resulted in structural degradation. The mechanical responses of molded and welded samples were discussed in light of detailed fracture analysis considering the fiber-matrix interface.
